Winter Lawn Care Tips
Preparing Your Lawn for Winter
Winter has truly made its presence felt, hasn’t it? It seems like those pleasant autumn days are now a distant memory. If you’re anything like us, you’ve already rummaged through your wardrobe and brought out all your cosy winter clothes! Despite the chill, the recent rainfall has been much-needed, and we hope your lawn and garden got a refreshing drink.
Gathering Fallen Leaves
Due to the strong winds we’ve experienced lately, you may have noticed a fresh layer of fallen leaves on your lawn. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to gather them up and add them to your compost or green bin. Allowing too many dead leaves to accumulate on your lawn can hinder sunlight from reaching the grass, potentially causing fungal diseases and attracting pests.
Mowing Considerations
Certain types of turf will naturally become dormant throughout the winter months, so you won’t have to worry too much about mowing. However, if you do need to give your lawn a trim, remember to adjust the mower height to avoid excessive damage to the grass blades. Cutting the grass too short during this time can make it more vulnerable to diseases. If you’re not using your mower frequently, now is an excellent opportunity to have it serviced and sharpen its blades in preparation for spring.
Managing Winter Weeds
While your lawn may take a break during winter, unfortunately, weeds do not. It’s important to keep a close eye on them and stay on top of their growth. You can choose to manually remove them by hand or opt for a selective herbicide.
It’s generally not recommended to apply fertilizer during winter since the grass is less capable of efficiently utilising the nutrients in the colder months.
