Tips for Maintaining Your Pavers
Paver Maintenance
Once your pavers have been laid, it’s crucial to adopt a regular maintenance routine to ensure they continue looking as good as the day they were installed. From proper cleaning techniques to preventative measures, here are some valuable tips to help you preserve the beauty of your paved area.
Cleaning
Avoid washing down the pavers with a hose or high-pressure cleaner until they have settled and the grout sand has firmly set. Use a stiff outdoor broom or garden blower to sweep away debris during the settling period. When using a blower, be mindful of the angle to prevent blowing out the joint sand. Regular sweeping and occasional washing will help prevent dirt and grime buildup, keeping your pavers looking attractive.
General Maintenance
Keep a supply of dried sand or polymeric sand on hand to top up any paving joints that may require additional filling. This will help maintain stability and prevent weed growth.
Treat weeds in the paving just as you would in your garden. Polymeric sand is particularly effective at inhibiting weed growth. When removing weeds, try to address them before they become too large. Large weeds may uproot the joint sand while being pulled out. Consider spot spraying the pavers with a weed killer as part of your regular garden maintenance routine to keep them weed-free.
Areas of the pavers that receive less sunlight or are prone to moisture should be treated to prevent the growth of fungus and mould. For pavers adjacent to garden or retaining walls, periodically spray the wall’s face to prevent the growth of mould or fungus.
After some time, it’s acceptable to pressure clean the pavers occasionally. However, avoid using a commercial pressure cleaner, as it may damage the paver’s surface. Think about using a domestic pressure cleaner with a maximum pressure of 1500 psi or less. Remember to replenish the joint sand if you decide to pressure clean your paving.
Drainage
Ensure proper drainage away from the paving and keep stormwater drains clean to ensure effective water runoff from the paved area.
Sealer
Consider applying a sealer to your pavers for optimal protection. High-quality sealers with a lifespan of 8-12 years are available. Sealing the pavers soon after installation safeguards them from weathering, grime, mould, dirt, and stains such as oil or red wine.
By keeping in mind these maintenance tips, you can preserve the appearance of your pavers for years to come. Regular cleaning, preventive measures, and, if necessary, sealing will help protect your investment and ensure your paved area continues to enhance the aesthetic appeal of your space.
