Autumn lawn care tips

Now that summer has come to an end and autumn is well and truly here, it’s important to start thinking about your lawn care routine in Adelaide, South Australia. With cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, autumn is the perfect time to prepare your lawn for the winter months ahead.

Here are some tips to help you keep your lawn healthy throughout autumn:

  1. Aerate Your Lawn: Aerating your lawn helps to improve soil drainage and allows more oxygen to reach the roots of your grass. Use a garden fork or aerator to create small holes in your lawn, and then leave the soil plugs to decompose on the surface.
  2. Fertilize Your Lawn: Autumn is a great time to fertilize your lawn, as it helps to promote root growth and prepares your lawn for the winter months ahead. Choose a slow-release fertilizer with a high nitrogen content and apply it evenly across your lawn.
  3. Mow Your Lawn Regularly: As the weather cools down, your lawn will grow more slowly, but it’s still important to keep it well-maintained. Regular mowing will help to keep your lawn looking neat and tidy and will also help to prevent the growth of weeds. Keeping your mower blade sharp helps keep your lawn healthy with sharp cuts instead of rips which could make your turf more susceptible to pests and disease.
  4. Remove Leaves and Debris: Falling leaves and debris can quickly accumulate on your lawn during autumn, which can lead to fungal growth and other problems. Make sure to rake up any fallen leaves and debris on a regular basis to keep your lawn healthy.
  5. Water Your Lawn Carefully: Although Adelaide experiences increased rainfall during autumn, it’s still important to keep an eye on the moisture levels in your lawn. Make sure to water your lawn deeply and infrequently, rather than frequently and shallowly, to encourage deep root growth.

By following these simple tips, you can help to keep your lawn healthy and looking great throughout autumn and into winter. This also ensures that your lawn will be in a great position when growing season starts again in spring. With a little bit of effort, you can ensure that your lawn looks its best all year round.
